  • The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors provided the Tazewell & Richlands High School girls volleyball teams with pink shirts and socks for their Breast Cancer awareness game played at THS on October 22nd. RHS won the Varsity competition while THS took the Junior Varsity match.
  • Since Mike first took office in Tazewell County, the outside auditing firm for the county has reported it is one of the best managed in Southwest Virginia. This is why they had $2.8 million in surplus funding during 2013.
  • The 4-H program prepares young people to step up to the challenges in their community and the world. Using research-based programming around positive youth development, 4-H youth get the hands-on real world experience they need to become leaders. Mike supports the program to help the children of Southwest Virginia reach their full potential.
  • County roads are the life line to the residents of the rural areas Mike represents. Because there are so many orphan roads in the Tazewell County Southern district, he has made paving and maintaining them a high priority in order to keep the roads in the best possible condition.
  • Public safety fire and rescue programs are another focus of Mike’s efforts. In his recent Tazewell County supervisor term he helped acquire a new tanker truck for the Clear Fork Volunteer Fire Department using county funds.

I have worked in the mines and the coal industry my whole adult life and no one knows better than I how regulations are devastating our coal industry and our way of life.  No one will fight harder against these regulations than I will.

Bluefield College School of Dental Medicine

October 18, 2013 Letter to the Editor:  While it may appear that Tazewell County is giving money to Bluefield College for the creation of a dental school or spending money it shouldn’t spend, that is not the case at all. In fact, every dollar extended to the Bluefield College School of Dental Medicine for start-up support will be returned to the County. The County is not giving or spending, but rather investing in a dental school project that will reap returns greater than its investment. As reported in an economic impact study conducted by...
